Le Suédois Jörgen Brink a remporté dimanche la Vasaloppet pour la deuxième année consécutive et battu au passage le record de cette course de ski de fond disputée en Suède sur 90 kilomètres, à laquelle participait cette année la Britannique "Pippa" Middleton.
Vainqueur en 3 heures 38 minutes 41 secondes, soit 16 secondes de mieux que l'ancien temps de référence, Brink a devancé son compatriote Daniel Tynell et le Tchèque Stanislav Rezac. Le trio est arrivé dans la même seconde. L'ancien record de la course était détenu depuis 1998 par Peter Göransson.
A noter la très belle 4e place du Suédois Rickardsson qui tentait une première expérience sur cette course tout comme le Norvégien Kjölstad très bon 5e. Le Tchèque Rezac est le seul non-Scandinave présent dans la top 20 !
Chez les dames, la Norvégienne Vibeke Skofterud s'est imposée en 4 heures 08 minutes 24 secondes,nouveau record, avec 3 minutes et 07 secondes d'avance sur sa compatriote Laila Kveli, le podium étant complété par la Suédoise Sereina Boner, à 6 minutes et 03 secondes. Une sacré perf pour Skofterud qui a su dompter les spécialistes dès sa première participation.
Du côté des célébrités, "Pippa" Middleton a passé le contrôle de la mi-course d'Evertsberg peu avant 12h00 en 393e position sur quelque 1.700 concurrentes inscrites. La belle-soeur du prince William participe à cette course avec son frère James afin de collecter des fonds pour une oeuvre de charité, Magic Breakfast, consacrée aux enfants. Le prince héritier Frederik du Danemark a, pour sa part, franchi le contrôle d'Evertsberg peu avant 11h30 en 5.283e position.
Quelque 15.800 skieurs et skieuses avaient pris dimanche matin, sous le soleil, le départ de cette course, qui a débuté en 1922 pour commémorer la fuite héroïque du roi de Suède Gustave Ier Vasa devant l'armée danoise. Elle retrace sur 90 km le parcours de Gustav Vasa lors d'une guerre contre les envahisseurs danois en 1521, entre Sälen et Mora (ouest), près de la frontière avec la Norvège.

I felt good all the way, my plan was to get a good position and keep it. With only a few kilometers left I felt that I still had power left in my arms and the goal was to be the first on the home-stretch. It was a hard fight in the end and the more am I happy that I was able to secure the victory! Especially, as it is already my third consecutive win!! It's absolutely fantastic!!! Sure, I prepared this race very well, but you never know what will come, therefore I am really satisfied!

Two years ago it felt like I was loosing the first place, this year it felt like I won a second place. It feels so good to be back and I am really satisfied with my race today. It was a hard fight in the end and I am happy that I was able to gain this second place!

It was a great feeling to win and I'm going to take it with me for sure! Well, it's simply amazing! I lost a pole right at the beginning of the race and Jenny Hansson passed me with such a speed that I thought that the race was over for me! However, I felt very good and therefore I just tried to go for it and to enjoy the race which I did. It's just fantastic that it then even worked out for the victory!!!
