The Bay to Breakers is not merely a race — it is San Francisco's most beloved civic celebration. First run in May 1912 as a morale boost for the city recovering from the 1906 earthquake, Bay to Breakers has been held consecutively every year since, making it the world's oldest consecutively run annual footrace. The 113th Annual edition takes place on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The course runs west through nine San Francisco neighborhoods — SoMa, the Tenderloin, Hayes Valley, Haight-Ashbury, the Inner Sunset — from the San Francisco Bay all the way to Ocean Beach on the Pacific Coast. A true end-to-end crossing of the city.
All races start at the intersection of Howard St. & Main St. in SoMa, just steps from the Embarcadero. The first wave fires at 8:00 AM, the last wave at 8:45 AM. The 12K course closes at 12:30 PM (JFK & Chain of Lakes, Golden Gate Park), and the finish line closes at 1:00 PM. The 15K Breakers Bonus adds 3 additional kilometers past the main finish for those who want to push further. Race bibs must be picked up at the Race Expo at Sports Basement Stonestown (unless you paid for packet mailing or VIP). Gear check is only available with a VIP add-on.
« Bumblebees, brides, unicorns, Spider-Men, superheroes, centipede teams, and runners wearing nothing but running watches — Bay to Breakers is the one race where the costume competition is just as fierce as the race itself. Welcome to San Francisco. »
