The Copenhagen Marathon has been held every May since its inaugural edition on 24 May 1980. Organised by Sparta and recognised as a World Athletics Bronze Label race, it has grown into one of the most sought-after spring marathons in Northern Europe, attracting around 10,000 runners from across the world.
The 2026 start fires on Øster Allé, next to Fælledparken. The loop course winds through Østerbro, the Inner City, Christianshavn, Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Frederiksberg, crossing the city’s most iconic bridges and passing landmarks including Rosenborg Castle, the Marble Church, Tivoli Gardens and the colourful Nyhavn harbour.
With virtually zero elevation gain and average race-day temperatures of 10–15°C, Copenhagen is one of Europe’s most reliable venues for a personal best — provided the Baltic wind plays along.
“A flat, fast loop through one of the world’s most liveable cities, with a race-day atmosphere charged by Danish hygge. Copenhagen is not just a marathon — it is an argument for running in Europe in May.”
