Corfu — the island Venice held and the Ottomans never took
Corfu occupied a strategic position at the entrance to the Adriatic, and Venice held it for over four centuries, from 1386 until Napoleon dissolved the Venetian Republic in 1797. That long occupation left the island with the Mediterranean's most complete surviving fortified Venetian port city — Corfu's Old Town, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, its Old and New Fortresses having repelled Ottoman sieges in 1537 and again, decisively, in 1716.
British and French rule followed Venice's before Corfu joined Greece in 1864, layering neoclassical squares and a cricket tradition onto the Venetian streets. Behind the port, Mount Pantokrator climbs to 906 metres, the island's highest point, its summit monastery rebuilt around 1689 and its clear-day views reaching across the water to both Albania and Italy.

Watch live →Venetian engineers carved the Contrafossa, a sea channel, to isolate the Old Fortress promontory entirely from the mainland, turning it into a man-made island within an island. The defence held: Corfiots credit Saint Spyridon, the island's patron, with the decisive repulse of the Ottoman siege of 1716, and still parade his relics through the streets each year in gratitude.
