Two webcams, from the lagoon to the marina

Beachcam.pt broadcasts live views of Praia de Faro, on the barrier peninsula that separates the Ria Formosa lagoon from the Atlantic, and of Vilamoura, the marina-led resort town further along the Algarve coast.

Faro — the lagoon city guarding Portugal's southern coast

Faro, capital of the Algarve, sits at the edge of the Ria Formosa, a 60-kilometre lagoon system protected from the Atlantic by six barrier islands and two peninsulas. Formed over centuries and reshaped dramatically by the 1755 earthquake, the Ria Formosa became a protected Natural Park in 1987 and now shelters more than 300 bird species, including flamingos feeding in its salt pans. Praia de Faro sits on the Ancão peninsula, the barrier spit locals simply call "the Ilha" — Atlantic surf on one side, calm lagoon shallows on the other, within the same five kilometres of sand.

West along the coast, Vilamoura tells a different story: a resort built from scratch in the 1970s around what is now Portugal's largest marina, with over a thousand berths and five championship golf courses radiating out from the waterfront. The Romans got there first, though — the ruins of Cerro da Vila, unearthed by a farmer's tractor in 1963, reveal a Roman fish-salting harbour that worked this coast two thousand years before the first golf course was laid.

A Roman harbour beneath a modern marina

In 1963, land preparation for the new Vilamoura resort turned up stones, bricks and mosaic fragments — the remains of Cerro da Vila, a working Roman port and fish-salting settlement dating to the late 1st century BC. Work stopped, and the ruins now sit in their own small museum a short walk from the marina that eventually replaced them.

Faro beyond the webcams

Ria Formosa Natural Park: a maze of lagoons, sandbars and barrier islands stretching from Faro to Tavira, reachable by boat from Faro's own marina.

Faro Old Town: 18th-century architecture behind the city's ancient walls, alongside the striking Capela de Ossos, the Chapel of Bones.

Cerro da Vila: the Roman ruins near Vilamoura, with preserved mosaics and fish-salting tanks documenting two thousand years of coastal trade.

Twenty minutes apart, Faro and Vilamoura tell the Algarve's whole story in miniature: one side a lagoon city that has watched over its wetlands since Roman times, the other a resort conjured from scratch in a single decade — both built, in the end, on the same coastline the Romans found first.

When to watch

Praia de Faro, low tide: for the widest view of sand and the calmest lagoon-side waters on the Ria Formosa flank.

Getting there: Praia de Faro is a short drive or bus ride from Faro city centre, across the bridge onto the Ancão peninsula; Vilamoura lies about 20km west, Algarve, Portugal.
