Frankfurt — where medieval trade fairs met global banking

Frankfurt am Main sits on the Main river in the German state of Hesse, its skyline dominated by skyscrapers unlike anywhere else in the country — a contrast so striking it earned the nickname "Mainhattan," a portmanteau of the Main and Manhattan. The financial district, or Bankenviertel, houses 17 of Germany's 18 skyscrapers, including the 259-meter Commerzbank Tower, once the tallest building in the European Union.

The roots of this financial identity run deep: Frankfurt hosted its first trade fairs in the 12th century, its first bank in 1405, and its stock exchange in 1585. Today it is the only city in the world housing two central banks, the European Central Bank and the German Bundesbank. Yet a short walk from the glass towers, the reconstructed half-timbered houses of Römerberg square and the Gothic Kaiserdom, seat of imperial coronations for centuries, preserve the medieval city that predates the skyline by 700 years.

From "Bankfurt" to a badge of honor

When the first tall buildings rose in the 1960s as banks moved in, locals coined the mocking nickname "Bankfurt." Decades later, as the skyline grew into Europe's densest cluster of skyscrapers outside London, both "Bankfurt" and "Mainhattan" shed their sarcasm and became a genuine point of civic pride.

Frankfurt beyond the webcam

Römerberg: Frankfurt's medieval main square, home to the Römer city hall building that has served as town hall for roughly 600 years.

Main Tower: the only skyscraper in Frankfurt with public access, its 54th-floor observation deck offers the city's best panoramic view.

Palmengarten: this 22-hectare botanical garden features exotic plant collections in elaborate greenhouses, a green counterpoint to the financial district.

A city whose skyline was once mocked as "Bankfurt" now stands as the only place in the world hosting two central banks side by side: Frankfurt turned a nickname meant as an insult into the clearest symbol of its financial identity.

When to watch

The skyline, at sunset: for the golden light reflecting off the glass towers of the banking district as the city lights begin to switch on.

Getting there: Frankfurt is served by one of Europe's busiest airports and a major rail hub, connecting the city to destinations across Germany and beyond, Hesse, Germany.
