Hamburg — where red brick meets glass on the Elbe
Hamburg sits on the Elbe river in northern Germany, connected to the North Sea and shaped by centuries as one of Europe's great port cities. Its historic core, the Speicherstadt, is the largest contiguous warehouse district in the world, built from 1883 on thousands of oak piles as a free economic zone. The neo-gothic red-brick buildings, laced with canals known as Fleeten, earned Hamburg its nickname "Venice of the North."
Right next to it rises HafenCity, one of Europe's largest inner-city urban development projects, crowned by the Elbphilharmonie. Opened in 2017 after a construction saga, the concert hall's glass wave rests atop a former warehouse and offers Europe's longest escalator up to a public viewing platform. In 2015, the Speicherstadt, together with the Kontorhaus district and the Chilehaus, became Germany's 40th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
