Kotor — a walled town beneath Europe's southernmost "fjord"
Kotor sits at the innermost point of the Bay of Kotor, a deep, winding inlet often described as Europe's southernmost fjord, though geologists classify it as a submerged river canyon rather than a true glacial fjord. Settled since antiquity and known to the Romans as Acruvium, the town later passed through Byzantine, Serbian and, for over four centuries, Venetian rule, before Napoleonic France, Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia each held it in turn. That long procession of rulers left Kotor's Old Town wrapped in what is considered part of the largest fortification system in the Balkans, its walls climbing more than 260 metres up the mountainside to Fort St. Ivan.
In 1979, the same year a powerful earthquake struck the region and badly damaged the Old Town's historic buildings, UNESCO inscribed the wider Bay of Kotor as the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor — recognising not just the fortified town but the whole chain of medieval settlements ringing the bay, including Perast, Risan and Prčanj.

Locals still care for the cat population today, and cat motifs — statues, souvenirs, even manhole covers — have become as much a symbol of the town as its fortress walls.
