Munich — the square that has never stopped beating
Munich, capital of the Free State of Bavaria, has grown around Marienplatz since the city's founding in 1158. For roughly 700 years the square served as Munich's marketplace, until the produce stalls moved to the nearby Viktualienmarkt in 1807. It was renamed Marienplatz in 1854, after the golden Mariensäule column erected there in 1638 to mark the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War.
The square's dominant landmark, the neo-Gothic New Town Hall, was built between 1867 and 1909. Its tower houses the Glockenspiel, added in 1908: 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures that re-enact a 1568 royal wedding joust and the historic Schäfflertanz coopers' dance, performed daily at 11am and noon. The Old Town Hall at the square's eastern end, rebuilt after wartime destruction, still stands as a reminder of the city's older medieval core.

Some 1,500 horses and 600 oxen fed the two-week wedding celebration, ending with a joust right on Marienplatz that still draws crowds skyward every day, centuries later.
