George — Where Africa's Wild Runs the World Series

The Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB returns to the Garden Route from 29 to 31 May 2026, bringing elite athletes and passionate trail runners from across the globe to the scenic city of George, Western Cape, South Africa. MUT is a fully-fledged UTMB World Series event — one of the most coveted qualifiers for the UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Outeniqua Mountains, the race sends runners through dense indigenous forests, fields of fynbos — one of the planet's most biodiverse floral kingdoms — across technical ridgelines and into breathtaking viewpoints stretching from the Indian Ocean to the south and the arid Karoo to the north. Six distances accommodate every level of trail runner, from the 11 km MUT Lite to the fearsome 163 km MUT Miler. All races start and finish at the Outeniqua Stadium in George.

Course — Outeniqua Mountains, Fynbos & Forest

Every MUT race starts and finishes at the Outeniqua Stadium in George, the hub of the long weekend festival. The routes immediately climb into the Outeniqua Mountains, alternating between rocky technical trails, lush indigenous forest — old-growth yellowwood and ironwood — and exposed fynbos-covered ridges. The high traverses deliver relentless panoramas: the Indian Ocean coastline of the Garden Route to the south, and the vast, ochre-baked Karoo plateau to the north. The MUT 60 route is famous for "Dizzy Heights", a technical section that captures everything wild and beautiful about South African mountain trail running. The full MUT Miler, at 163 km and D+8,100m, is one of the most demanding single-loop courses in the UTMB World Series calendar.
