Wildlife and wilderness along every mile. The Olympic Discovery Trail is famous for its abundant wildlife. Runners regularly spot bald eagles soaring over the water, harbor seals hauled out on rocks along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and a remarkable variety of shorebirds and waterfowl. In the fall, salmon can be seen spawning at the Morse Creek crossing. The trail passes through towering Douglas fir forests, over dramatic trestle bridges, and finishes with a breathtaking five-mile stretch along the Strait of Juan de Fuca — with the Olympic Mountains visible behind you and Vancouver Island across the water.

The course — Sequim to Port Angeles

The full marathon and half marathon run point-to-point on the Olympic Discovery Trail — a converted rail corridor that is 99% paved, wide, and well-marked at every mile. The course showcases stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, passes over iconic wooden trestle bridges, and concludes with an unforgettable five-mile finishing stretch along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The course is USATF certified and qualifies for the Boston Marathon. Average June temperatures: high 65°F (18°C), low 49°F (9°C). Water stations with water and Gatorade every ~2 miles — 14 stations total on the marathon course.

"The North Olympic Discovery Marathon is truly one of the most beautiful marathon venues anywhere. Frequent sightings of seals, eagles, and an array of shore birds are common from the trail. Iconic trestle bridges provide beautiful backdrops. This rails-to-trails course is a wide, hard surface trail — the perfect setting to chase your Boston qualifier." — nodm.com
