Portumna — A Spiritual Experience in the Forest

The 2026 Portumna Forest Marathon & Ultra takes place on Saturday 6 June 2026 in Portumna Forest Park, Co. Galway, Ireland — 450 hectares of Coillte-managed woodland of Scots Pine and Norway Spruce, home to fallow deer and red squirrels. Race Director Ray O'Connor — founder of the legendary Connemara International Marathon — brings his wealth of experience to this unique event every June. The name Portumna itself comes from the Irish Port Omna, meaning "the landing place of the oak tree".

Taking part in the Portumna Forest Marathon is a spiritual experience — while it tests the body physically, it soothes the mind in equal proportions. The runners, crew, and marshalls blend in with the environment and although there is plenty of clapping and encouragement for the runners, there is a serenity about the place that bows down to the beauty of the natural environment. Everyone talks a little softer and smiles a little wider. Widely regarded as one of the finest and flattest inland courses in Ireland, all distances share a common flat 5km loop format — making it ideal for personal bests at every distance from 10km to the 50km ultra.

🦌 Wildlife of Portumna Forest Park

Portumna Forest Park is home to a thriving population of fallow deer — graceful, spotted animals that move silently between the Scots Pines on the forest floor. If you slow your pace slightly on the quieter sections of the loop, you stand a real chance of spotting them watching you from the treeline. The park is also one of the few remaining habitats of the red squirrel in the west of Ireland. Running through this forest is unlike any other race experience — the wildlife doesn't stop for the event; you simply become part of their world for a few hours.

«The distances are run over a flat 5K loop within the Portumna Forest Park. The course is run on tarmacadam roads and forest paths that are solid, compacted, even gravel. Portumna Forest Park is home to a whole host of animals including fallow deer and the red squirrel. Every June, the best distance runners from Ireland and from all over the world converge here in their quest to find the ultimate ultra marathon.» — forestmarathon.com / runningcalendar.ie
