The Southampton Marathon is one of the leading road marathons on England's South Coast. Run through the city of Southampton, in the county of Hampshire, the course covers the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 km) on a varied urban route taking in the historic city centre, the medieval walls, the docks and the green spaces of Southampton Common.
Southampton is a city of around 270,000 inhabitants on the south coast of England, sitting at the head of Southampton Water and the Solent. The city has long been one of the UK's leading maritime ports — the home port of the RMS Titanic, the modern hub for cruise liners, and a major container terminal. The marathon course runs past landmarks such as the medieval Bargate, the Old Town walls, St Mary's Church, the docks at Town Quay and the leafy expanse of Southampton Common.
