L'Autrichien Mario Stecher a remporté la 16e épreuve de la Coupe du monde de combiné nordique, dimanche à Seefeld (Autriche), dont son compatriote Felix Gottwald s'est classé 5e permettant ainsi à Jason Lamy-Chappuis, absent ce week-end, d'être quasiment assuré de remporter le globe de N.1 mondial.

 

Stecher, 9e après le concours de saut à skis, a devancé à l'issue du 10 km de ski de fond l'Allemand Eric Frenzel, 2e à 1 sec, et l'Italien Alessandro Pittin, 3e à 2 sec 2/10.

Parti en 15e position, Gottwald est passé en tête à un kilomètre de l'arrivée, mais a cédé dans le final pour se contenter de la 5e place à 5 sec 8/10 du vainqueur du jour.

Les français terminent 28e avec Pinel, 32e Cailleau, 36e Martin et 45e Viry.

Au classement général de la Coupe du monde, Gottwald compte 295 points de retard sur Lamy-Chappuis alors qu'il ne reste plus que trois courses au programme, soit un maximum de 300 points à empocher.

Le Français, au repos avant de s'envoler cette semaine pour préparer les jeux Olympiques 2010, n'a plus besoin que de cinq points, l'équivalent d'une 26e place, lors de la prochaine épreuve de Coupe du monde début mars à Lahti (Finlande). Il a toujours terminé dans les dix premiers cette saison sur le circuit mondial.

Le Jurassien de 23 ans peut aborder ses deuxièmes JO l'esprit libre, mais ne sombre pas dans le triomphalisme.  (avec AFP)

"Tout reste à faire, j'ai toujours dit qu'aux JO, tout est remis à plat, il n'y a pas de leader de la Coupe du monde. Cela reste la course d'un jour, certains sont préparés exprès pour les Jeux comme Manninen ou Lodwick", a-t-il prévenu.

Mario Stecher (AUT) - first

I wasn't really happy with my ski jumping attempt, but the points of disadvantage weren't that much. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of the wind and gate factor rules, but today they were on my side. I had a good starting position for the cross-country portion; Felix Gottwald caught my group later than expected. Then, I skied with him and took the right moment for the final sprint.

It is very emotional to win in front of my home crowd. My wife and my son were also present, and it is just great to hear all these people cheer for you. We don't have to repeat the small mistakes we made last year in view of the World Championships, when we didn't get any medals. The Olympics will be great, I'm looking confidently ahead. On Thursday, we will leave for Canmore in Canada.

Eric Frenzel (GER) - second

I'm very happy with this weekend here in Seefeld, I got first and second place. I'm happy with my jumping performance today. Unfortunately, I saw just moments to late that Stecher broke away in view of the finish line. My running performance is getting better and better, if it remains as it is, I will very well prepared for the Olympic competitions.

 

Alessandro Pittin (ITA) - third

 

My strategy was to catch Frenzel and to run with him on the top. Today, however, I did not feel that well as I did yesterday. As I saw that other came up, I tried to save energy and to prepare myself in the best possible way for the final sprint. It worked out, I'm happy with this podium place.
