Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan), the third-largest of the Balearic Islands off the east coast of Spain, is one of the most iconic destinations in the Mediterranean. Famous the world over for its electric nightlife and crystalline beaches, Ibiza is also a place of profound beauty, ancient history and unspoiled nature — a side of the island many visitors never discover.
The island's old town, Dalt Vila — "the high town" — crowns a limestone hill above the port, its Renaissance fortifications enclosing a labyrinth of whitewashed streets that lead to a 14th-century cathedral with sweeping views over the sea. In 1999, the Biodiversity and Culture of Ibiza was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising both Dalt Vila's extraordinary fortified architecture and the surrounding Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows — the oldest living organism on Earth.
"Ibiza is a contradiction the Mediterranean does perfectly: ancient ramparts above a hedonist's paradise, Posidonia seagrass older than civilisation beneath party boats, whitewashed silence inside the old town and pulsing sound systems outside. The webcam catches whichever version is on show right now."
