View live webcams →Idre Fjäll – Sweden's southernmost mountain, Städjan and the land of the South Sámi
Idre Fjäll is a self-contained ski resort village at 588–890 m above sea level in northwestern Dalarna, 9 km from the village of Idre, in one of the most thinly populated and forested regions of Sweden. The resort markets itself accurately as Sweden's southernmost mountain — though this is less a geographical superlative than a cultural identity: skiing in four directions simultaneously from a single central point, dense spruce forests on all flanks, and a continental location far enough inland that cold, stable winters are the norm rather than the exception. Average snow depth in March: 83 cm at summit, 64 cm at base. That is not marketing; it is meteorology.
The Städjan (1 131 m), a strikingly symmetric pyramid peak rising about 12 km northwest of the resort, is the landscape's defining landmark. Geologically unusual for the Scandinavian mountains — it is an intrusive sill or laccolith, sometimes described as a "extinct volcano," its steep-sided cone contrasting sharply with the rounded plateaux typical of Dalarna — Städjan is visible from most high points of Idre Fjäll and from the west-facing webcams on clear days. Hiking to its summit is the summer objective for most visitors who don't ski; the views from the top extend to Nipfjället (adjacent ridge), the Norwegian border mountains to the west and the vast Dalarna forests stretching east toward Östersund.
The Pernilla Wiberg Hotel at the heart of the resort carries the name of Idre's most celebrated native: Pernilla Wiberg, who grew up in Idre and became the greatest Swedish alpine ski racer of the modern era. Her record: Olympic gold in giant slalom at Albertville 1992, Olympic gold in combined at Lillehammer 1994 (Aksel Lund Svindal's final race was in Åre in 2019; Pernilla Wiberg's farewell was also memorable), and 24 FIS World Cup victories including two overall season titles. The hotel, designed in contemporary Scandinavian mountain style with Dalarna folk art motifs, is ski-in/ski-out at the base of the resort.
The Idre Fjäll ski area runs 41 km of pistes across its four-directional layout (north, south, east, west slopes — Nordbackarna, Södra, Östra, Väst) with a vertical drop of 302 m (588–890 m) and 23+ lifts including a gondola. The concept of four-direction skiing gives Idre Fjäll a practical advantage: whatever the wind direction or sun angle, there is always a sheltered face with good light and fresh snow. The resort's snow guarantee — at least 10 slopes and 2.5 km of cross-country trails open, or you can cancel to 3 days before arrival — is one of the most concrete guarantees in Swedish skiing.
The Idre Himmelfjäll, a separate ski resort 5 km from Idre village, adds 24 slopes and 10 lifts with a different character: wooded runs "in true Colorado style," as the resort itself puts it, winding between spruce trees from the summit down to the base. The Himmelfjäll is newer than Idre Fjäll and positions itself as a complementary destination for the same visitor base — skiers staying at one resort routinely ski both in the same week.
The South Sámi dimension of Idre is one of the most significant and least known aspects of the region. Idre is part of the territory of the Idre Sameby, one of the southernmost Sámi communities in Sweden, whose traditional reindeer herding routes cross the mountains visible from the resort's webcams. The Sámi presence here pre-dates the ski resort by centuries; the word Idre itself is of Sámi origin. Visiting in winter, it is not uncommon to see reindeer in the forest clearings visible from the resort roads, and several cultural experiences — reindeer feeding, Sámi storytelling, joik performances — are offered as activities from the Idre Fjäll activity centre.
The Biathlon centre at Idre Fjäll (visible in the west-slope webcam) is a competition-grade facility hosting regional and national events. It sits in the same forested landscape that has produced competitive biathletes from the Dalarna region for decades. The combination of cross-country terrain (170 km+ of marked trails in the wider area) and the biathlon shooting range makes Idre a training centre as well as a tourist resort.
« The west-slope webcam at 848 metres looks out over the Städjan pyramid on clear days — a cone shape so distinct it appears more like a Scandinavian Fuji than a Swedish hill. On powder mornings after a northwesterly snowfall, the same camera shows untracked faces to the west in a forest landscape that has changed very little since the reindeer herding routes were first drawn through these trees. Idre Fjäll is not the most dramatic mountain in Scandinavia. It may be the most honest. »

View live →The webcam network spans 173 m of vertical (675–848 m) within the Idre Fjäll ski area itself, with the Idre Himmelfjäll weather feed extending the coverage to the adjacent resort and the Städjan panorama webcam looking beyond the ski area to the iconic volcanic peak.
The Väst 6an west slopes webcam (848 m, highest) is the most scenically rewarding: from the top of the Väst 6an chairlift on clear days, the Städjan pyramid appears on the horizon to the northwest, exactly as the resort's own promotional photography shows it. The west-facing slope behind the camera catches the orange light of late afternoon in January, when the low sun angles of 61°N latitude turn even ordinary ski conditions into something cinematic.
The Biathlon centre webcam is the most sport-specific: the shooting range, stadium structure and cross-country tracks are all visible, giving it a similar character to the Ruhpolding Chiemgau Arena or Oberhof ARENA webcams in the German series — a competition facility viewable in real time outside the event season. Idre Fjäll's biathlon history is quieter than Ruhpolding's, but the facility is genuine and active.
The Nordbackarna northern slopes webcam (675 m) captures the practical advantage of north-facing terrain in Sweden's continental climate: while south-facing slopes are icy by early afternoon in February, Nordbackarna often has fresh, uncompacted snow all day. Cross-country skiers heading into the Dalarna forests start from here, and the webcam is the one checked by locals before choosing piste over trail.
The Idre Himmelfjäll weather feed (idrehimmelfjall.se/en/weather) is structurally different from the others — a meteorological and slope-status page rather than a camera image — but it extends coverage to a resort that shares the same visitor base, the same forests and the same mountain weather system as Idre Fjäll. Checking both together gives a complete picture of the Idre area.
