A coastal station on the F1's man-made island

Sean's Surf Report runs a real-time coastal weather and surf monitoring station on Yas Island, tracking conditions for kitesurfers and windsurfers on the same artificial island that hosts Formula 1's season finale.

Yas Island — a stretch of reclaimed sand built for speed

Named after the Bani Yas tribe, Yas Island is an entirely artificial 25-square-kilometre leisure development, created through land reclamation off Abu Dhabi's coast and now one of the emirate's largest tourism projects. Its centrepiece, the Hermann Tilke-designed Yas Marina Circuit, opened in 2009 with Bruno Senna completing the first test laps, and hosted its first Grand Prix that November — Formula 1's second-ever day-to-night race, starting in daylight and finishing under floodlights as Sebastian Vettel took the win. Abu Dhabi has closed out the F1 calendar as the season finale ever since, delivering title-deciding showdowns for Vettel, Rosberg and Verstappen along the way.

Next door, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi built its own reputation on raw acceleration. Its flagship ride, Formula Rossa, launched riders from 0 to 240 km/h in under five seconds, and held the Guinness World Record for the fastest rollercoaster launch on Earth for well over a decade before finally being surpassed. The same island later added SeaWorld Abu Dhabi in 2023 — the first SeaWorld park built without orcas — alongside waterparks and marinas, turning a patch of reclaimed Gulf coastline into one of the most attraction-dense square kilometres in the region.

A race that watches the sun go down mid-lap

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix's defining feature isn't a corner or a straight — it's the light. Starting in daylight and ending under floodlights, drivers must adjust to shifting visibility and cooling track temperatures within the same 55-lap race, a challenge unique to the handful of Grands Prix run at dusk.

Yas Island beyond the webcam

Yas Marina Circuit: the Formula 1 season-finale venue, its grandstands entirely covered against the desert sun.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi: the world's largest indoor theme park, home to the Formula Rossa rollercoaster.

Yas Waterworld & SeaWorld Abu Dhabi: the island's two marine and water parks, SeaWorld notably orca-free.

A stretch of dredged Gulf coastline became, within a single decade, home to both a Formula 1 season finale and the fastest rollercoaster launch on the planet: Yas Island's entire identity was built around the idea that speed sells better than anything else in the desert.

When to check

Grand Prix weekend, late November: for the dusk-to-dark race and the island at its busiest.

Getting there: Yas Island sits about 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and roughly 30 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
