Ålesund — a town Kaiser Wilhelm II helped rebuild in a single style
On the night of 23 January 1904, a factory fire whipped up by a winter storm tore through Ålesund's densely packed wooden buildings, destroying more than 850 structures in roughly sixteen hours and leaving over 10,000 of the town's 12,000 residents homeless. Remarkably, only one person died. News of the disaster reached German Emperor Wilhelm II, a frequent visitor to the region who adored its fjords; he dispatched four ships loaded with workers and building materials to help.
Local architects, trained in the Art Nouveau style then fashionable across Europe, rebuilt the entire town centre in stone and brick between 1904 and 1907 — turrets, dragon motifs, floral carvings and wrought-iron balconies replacing the wooden houses lost to the fire. The result makes Ålesund the only town in the world reconstructed almost entirely in Jugendstil architecture within a single three-year span, a distinction that still draws architecture enthusiasts from across the globe.
