Antalya — a paradise a king ordered his men to find
Legend holds that King Attalus II of Pergamon, hunting for "paradise on earth," sent scouts along the southern Anatolian coast and founded Attaleia around 159 BC at the spot they recommended. The city passed to Rome in 133 BC under the will of Attalus III, and flourished as a Mediterranean port — prosperous enough that in 130 AD, Emperor Hadrian's visit was marked with a triple-arched marble triumphal gate that still stands at the entrance to Kaleiçi, Antalya's walled old town, its original Roman paving visible underfoot through a glass panel.
Fifty kilometres east, near the village of Belkıs, the ancient city of Aspendos built an even more ambitious monument: a Roman theatre completed under Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd century AD, designed by the architect Zenon. With a 96-metre diameter and seating for up to 13,000 spectators, it survives today as widely considered the best-preserved Roman theatre anywhere in the Mediterranean world, still hosting opera and ballet performances each summer.

Watch live →When Roman power faded, the Seljuks didn't tear Aspendos's theatre down — they converted it into a caravanserai, a stop for trading caravans, which is likely why the stage building survives almost intact today. Twenty centuries after Marcus Aurelius commissioned it, the theatre still hosts live opera and ballet every summer.
Antalya beyond the webcams
