Auckland — a city desired by many, built on sleeping fire
Māori named the isthmus Tāmaki Makaurau, roughly "Tāmaki desired by many," a description of just how contested the land was among iwi over centuries, drawn by fertile volcanic soil and two harbours within walking distance of each other. That volcanic ground is no metaphor: Auckland sits directly atop a field of around 50 separate eruption points, each stemming from an isolated pocket of magma rather than a single central volcano, meaning any future eruption could technically happen almost anywhere across the city rather than at one predictable vent. The cones are dormant, not extinct, and the magma pool beneath the city has never gone away.
Auckland briefly served as New Zealand's colonial capital from 1840, only to lose that status to Wellington in 1865, chosen for its more central geography — the city kept growing regardless, into the country's largest by a wide margin. Its modern skyline gained a defining feature in 1997, when the Sky Tower opened at 328 metres, becoming the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere, a title it held for 25 years until Jakarta's Autograph Tower surpassed it in 2022. It remains the tallest structure in New Zealand and the 28th tallest tower on Earth.

Watch live →After the SS Wairarapa sank near Great Barrier Island in 1894, the isolated island launched the world's first pigeon post service using purpose-printed postage stamps, birds carrying mail across the gap to the mainland faster than any boat could manage — a solution so effective it kept running commercially for years afterward.
Auckland beyond the webcams
Sky Tower: 328 metres of observation decks, a revolving restaurant, and the SkyJump base jump platform.
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill: the largest of Auckland's volcanic pā sites, with visible pre-European terracing.
Auckland War Memorial Museum: home to the country's finest collection of Māori taonga (treasures).
A city named for how badly everyone wanted it sits today on ground that could, in theory, erupt from almost anywhere within its limits — yet its tallest landmark is a tower built purely for the view. Auckland's relationship with its own foundations has always been a little more precarious than its skyline lets on.
When to watch
Evening: for the Sky Tower illuminated over the harbour, sailboats visible against the city lights.
Getting there: the Sky Tower sits in Auckland's CBD, at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, New Zealand.
