Bled — a lake built on legends and Swiss naturopathy

Lake Bled sits at 475 metres in the Julian Alps, its only island — the sole natural island in all of Slovenia — crowned by the Church of the Assumption. The current baroque church dates to the 17th century, but the site's history stretches back to a prehistoric Slavic cult ground, with 124 graves from the 9th to 11th centuries still visible through a glass panel inside. Its famous wishing bell, cast in Padua in 1534, draws visitors up the 99 stone steps from the jetty; legend holds that ringing it three times grants a wish, in memory of a widow whose own bell for the church sank in a storm before it ever arrived.

On the opposite shore, Bled Castle has watched over the lake since 1011, when the area was granted to the Bishop of Brixen — making it Slovenia's oldest castle. Bled's modern identity as a resort dates to the 19th century, when Swiss naturopath Arnold Rikli built a spa around the lake's thermal springs and alpine air, laying the foundations for the tourism that still defines the town, and lending his name to the Rikli Balance Hotel where the main webcam is mounted today.

The bell that was never delivered

Legend says a grieving widow commissioned a bell for the island church after her husband was murdered and his body thrown into the lake — but the boat carrying it sank in a storm before it arrived. Some say the original bell can still be heard ringing from beneath the water on clear nights, while the one visitors ring today was cast to replace it.

Bled beyond the webcams

Bled Island: reached by traditional wooden "pletna" boats, home to the Church of the Assumption and its wishing bell.

Bled Castle: perched 130 metres above the lake, Slovenia's oldest castle now houses a museum, wine cellar and blacksmith's forge.

Straža hill: a 520-metre summer toboggan run that becomes a small ski slope in winter, with panoramic views back over the lake.

A widow's bell that never arrived still gets rung today, just by a different bell: Bled's most famous legend isn't really about loss, it's about how thoroughly the town turned that loss into a tradition every visitor still takes part in.

When to watch

Lake Bled, early morning: for the calmest water and the clearest reflection of the island and the Julian Alps.

Getting there: Lake Bled sits in the Julian Alps, about 55km from Ljubljana; Straža hill rises directly above the southern shore, Slovenia.
