Giza — the only Ancient Wonder that never fell
Built over roughly twenty years and completed around 2560 BC as a tomb for the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. At its original height of 146.6 metres, it held the record as the tallest man-made structure on Earth for nearly 3,800 years, a record unbroken until the spire of England's Lincoln Cathedral surpassed it in 1311 — and even then, only by a margin history remembers mainly as a footnote to the pyramid's much longer reign.
Its construction required an estimated 2.3 million limestone and granite blocks, each averaging 2.5 tonnes, for a total mass approaching six million tonnes. Nearby stands the Pyramid of Khafre, Khufu's son, which today appears taller than the Great Pyramid despite being slightly shorter, thanks to its steeper angle and position on higher ground — and it still retains patches of the smooth white casing stone that once sheathed both structures, hinting at how dazzling the complex looked when new. Khafre's pyramid complex is also home to the Great Sphinx, carved directly from the bedrock and generally believed to depict Khafre himself.

Watch live →In 1954, workers uncovered a sealed pit beside the Great Pyramid's southern face containing a 43-metre cedar-wood ship, painstakingly dismantled into 1,224 separate pieces across 650 parts. Reconstructed and now displayed in a museum on-site, the Khufu ship is believed to have been built for the pharaoh's journey into the afterlife — a vessel that never sailed, buried whole beside the tomb it was meant to serve.
