Cappadocia — a landscape built by volcanoes and carved by hand
Cappadocia's surreal skyline began roughly 14 million years ago, when a series of eruptions from the region's volcanoes blanketed Central Anatolia in ash. That ash hardened into soft, porous tuff, later capped in places by tougher basalt; millennia of wind and water erosion then whittled the softer rock away, leaving behind the cone-shaped "fairy chimneys" that give the region its name — some topped with a harder basalt cap that slowed their erosion and gave them their distinctive mushroom shape.
Humans arrived early and stayed: starting in the 4th century, Byzantine Christians began hollowing churches, homes and entire underground cities directly into the tuff, seeking refuge from persecution and later invasion. Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, protecting 9,614 hectares that include rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes still vivid after eight centuries. Uçhisar, visible from the webcam, is anchored by its rock castle — the highest point in the region — overlooking the Pigeon Valley below, named for the hundreds of dovecotes carved into its cliffs to collect guano as fertiliser.
