Cartagena — a fortune so tempting it needed 260 years of walls
Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1533 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia, and it took barely a generation before the city's wealth — gold and goods funneled from across South America toward Spain — made it a magnet for pirates and rival European powers. Sir Francis Drake sacked it in 1586, and the near-constant threat that followed forced Spain into one of the most ambitious defensive building projects in its colonial history: a full ring of stone walls around the city, and on nearby San Lázaro Hill, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas.
Construction on the fortress began in 1536 and stretched, in stages, across 260 years, expanding through the 1650s and beyond into the sprawling complex that survives today — widely regarded as the largest fortification the Spanish Empire ever built anywhere in the Americas. Its triangular bastions, interlocking batteries and network of tunnels made it nearly impossible to take one section without capturing the whole system, a design that helped Cartagena withstand repeated sieges by the British, French and pirates alike over the following two centuries.

Watch live →Local legend holds that the fortress's coral-quarried stone blocks were bound together with calicanto mortar mixed with ox blood — and darker versions of the tale claim the blood of enslaved labourers, who did the actual construction work under Spanish supervision. Whatever the true recipe, the walls have survived centuries of Caribbean humidity, cannon fire and hurricanes largely intact.
