Havana — a city frozen in 1959 and still running
Founded by the Spanish in 1519 and made the capital of Cuba in 1607, Havana grew into one of the Caribbean's principal shipbuilding centres, its wealth eventually protected by four coral-limestone fortresses ringing the bay — including El Morro, built between 1589 and 1630 to guard the harbour entrance against pirates and rival powers. The old colonial core, laid out around four original plazas, retains that layout almost unchanged today; UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1982 for the remarkable unity of its Baroque and Neoclassical architecture.
But Havana's most famous feature dates not from the colonial era but from the 1959 revolution. When the United States imposed its trade embargo shortly afterward, imports of new American cars stopped overnight — and Cubans, unable to replace their vehicles, simply kept the 1950s Buicks, Chevrolets and Cadillacs running instead, patching engines with Soviet and Chinese parts and improvising the rest. Roughly 60,000 of these pre-1960 American cars are still on Havana's roads today, most now working as taxis, turning the whole city into a rolling exhibit of automotive history that nobody actually planned to preserve.

It never saw the military use it was designed for, and instead became exactly what it is today: Havana's favourite place to walk, fish, and watch the sun go down over the water.
