Honolulu — a "sheltered harbor" guarded by fake diamonds
The name Honolulu translates roughly to "sheltered harbor" or "calm port" in Hawaiian, a fitting description for the natural anchorage that made the city Oahu's commercial and administrative centre. Just east of Waikiki rises the volcanic tuff cone Hawaiians call Lēʻahi, "brow of the tuna," for the way its ridgeline echoes a tuna's dorsal fin. British sailors saw it differently in 1825: spotting calcite crystals glittering on its slopes, they mistook them for diamonds and named it Diamond Hill — a mistaken identity that stuck permanently as "Diamond Head," even after everyone realised the crystals were worthless.
Waikiki itself carries an equally telling name: it means "spouting waters," a reference to the streams and wetlands that once defined the area long before hotels and beach bars arrived. A few miles inland stands ʻIolani Palace, completed in 1882 for King Kalākaua and still the only royal palace on American soil — a reminder that Hawaii was an independent kingdom for most of the 19th century, decades before it became the 50th US state in 1959.

Watch live →The calcite that fooled 19th-century British sailors had no gem value whatsoever — a fact discovered soon after the "Diamond Hill" name spread. Yet rather than reverting to its Hawaiian name Lēʻahi, the mistaken label only grew more entrenched, eventually giving Honolulu one of the most recognisable landmark names in the entire Pacific, built entirely on a case of mistaken geology.
