Krakow — a capital that survived what others didn't

Krakow served as the capital of Poland from 1038 until 1596, when Sigismund III Vasa moved the royal court to Warsaw — though Krakow kept its status as the site of coronations and royal funerals for years afterward. Its Main Market Square, Rynek Główny, dates to the city's 1257 charter under Magdeburg law: laid out 200 metres on each side, it remains the largest medieval square anywhere in Europe, its chequerboard street grid radiating outward exactly as designed nearly eight centuries ago.

Unlike Warsaw, Gdańsk or Wrocław, all heavily destroyed in the Second World War, Krakow's historic centre survived with comparatively little physical damage, preserving an unusually dense concentration of original medieval and early-modern buildings. That survival earned Krakow's Old Town and Wawel Hill a place on UNESCO's very first World Heritage List in 1978 — one of just twelve sites inscribed that year, alongside the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine.

A trumpet call that never finishes

Every hour, a trumpeter plays the hejnał mariacki from the taller tower of St. Mary's Basilica — and cuts it off abruptly, mid-note, in every direction. Legend traces the tradition to a 13th-century watchman shot by an arrow mid-warning as he spotted an approaching attack; whether or not the story is exactly true, first written records of the call date to 1392, and Polish radio has broadcast the noon rendition live nationwide since 1927.

Krakow beyond the webcams

Wawel Castle & Cathedral: the royal residence and coronation site of Polish kings for centuries, its Sigismund Chapel considered one of Poland's finest Renaissance interiors.

Cloth Hall (Sukiennice): the Renaissance trading hall at the centre of the Main Square, now housing souvenir stalls and an art gallery.

Kazimierz: Krakow's historic Jewish quarter, its synagogues and cafés forming one of the city's most atmospheric neighbourhoods.

A city spared the wartime destruction that flattened so much of Poland now carries the weight of preserving what survived: Krakow's Old Town isn't a reconstruction of the medieval city, it simply never stopped being one.

When to watch

Main Market Square, midday: to catch the hourly hejnał trumpet call from St. Mary's Basilica at its busiest.

Getting there: the Main Market Square and Grodzka street sit at the heart of Krakow's Old Town; Wawel Castle overlooks the Vistula a short walk south, Lesser Poland, Poland.
