The Leiden Marathon celebrates its 35th edition in 2026. First held in 1991, it has grown into one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated running weekends, drawing around 15,000 participants across all distances. The event runs on Sunday 10 May, preceded by a walking event on Saturday 9 May. Bib collection is at Garenmarktplein on both days.
The course starts on the Breestraat in the heart of ancient Leiden — birthplace of Rembrandt, home of the oldest university in the Netherlands, and the city where the Pilgrim Fathers spent 12 years before sailing to America. It finishes at the Vismarkt, beside the town hall on the banks of the Old Rhine.
Between start and finish, runners wind through 9 villages in the Dutch Green Heart (Groene Hart) — a landscape of polders, windmills, canals and curious cows. The course is widely described as the most beautiful in the Netherlands.
“A single flat loop past windmills, polders and Dutch stepped-gable houses, starting and finishing in the city of Rembrandt. The Leiden Marathon does not chase scale — it chases character. After 35 editions, it has earned its reputation as the most scenic marathon in the Netherlands.”
