Mariehamn — capital of the only demilitarized region in the Baltic
The Åland Islands occupy a singular place in European diplomacy: demilitarized since the 1856 Treaty of Paris, which followed the Crimean War and the British-French destruction of the Russian fortress at Bomarsund, and granted full autonomy under Finnish sovereignty by a League of Nations ruling in 1921. That decision, reached after Sweden and Finland both claimed the Swedish-speaking archipelago following Finnish independence, is still cited as a landmark case in international minority rights law. Åland remains politically neutral and entirely free of military installations to this day, with residents even exempt from Finland's conscription.
Mariehamn itself, founded in 1861 by Russian Tsar Alexander II and named for his wife Maria Alexandrovna, grew into a major centre of the global grain trade during the golden age of sailing ships. That maritime heritage survives in the Pommern, a four-masted steel-hulled barque built in 1903 and now permanently moored as a museum ship in Västerhamn — the last of its kind still afloat, and the pride of a town nicknamed "the world's smallest metropolis."
