Marrakech — a minaret that became the blueprint for two other continents
Marrakech was founded around 1070-1072 by the Almoravid dynasty under Abu Bakr ibn Umar and Yusuf ibn Tashfin, chosen for its strategic position at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, controlling the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade routes. The city's reddish clay construction, tadelakt, gave it the nickname it still carries today: the Red City. When the rival Almohad dynasty seized power in 1147, they rebuilt the city's religious centrepiece from the ground up, completing the Koutoubia Mosque in its current form in 1158.
The mosque's 77-metre square minaret became far more than a local landmark. Its clean Almohad lines and horseshoe arches were copied directly by the same dynasty elsewhere in their empire, making it the architectural prototype for two of the most famous towers in the world: the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, both echoing Koutoubia's proportions across the Strait of Gibraltar. Nearby, Jemaa el-Fnaa square — once a public execution ground under Yusuf ibn Tashfin, its name possibly meaning "assembly of the dead" — evolved over centuries into the open-air theatre of storytellers, musicians and food stalls that earned it UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2001.
