Three live views along the Yarra
Three YouTube live streams cover Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city and one of its most frequent "world's most liveable" title holders.
Melbourne — a city purchased with 40 blankets, later declared void
On 6 June 1835, entrepreneur John Batman signed what became known as Batman's Treaty with eight Wurundjeri elders, claiming roughly 600,000 acres around what is now Melbourne in exchange for goods including 40 blankets, 30 axes, 100 knives and 200 handkerchiefs. Within weeks, the colonial governor in Sydney declared the agreement void, invoking the doctrine that the land had legally belonged to no one before British settlement. Batman's rival John Fawkner arrived independently soon after, and the two men's dispute over who truly founded the city has never fully settled; the settlement was formally named Melbourne in 1837, honouring British Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.
What transformed the small settlement into a global power was gold. The 1850s Victorian gold rush, centred less than 100 miles away near Ballarat and Bendigo, quadrupled Melbourne's population within three years and fed a construction boom so extravagant the city earned the nickname "Marvellous Melbourne" — by the 1880s, briefly the richest city on Earth. That same gold rush produced the Eureka Stockade of 1854, an armed uprising by miners protesting licensing fees, one of only two armed rebellions in Australian history and a formative moment for the country's democratic reforms. Decades later, Melbourne served as Australia's temporary federal capital from 1901 until Canberra was finished in 1927.

Watch live →Eureka Tower, one of the tallest residential buildings in the Southern Hemisphere, takes its name directly from the 1854 miners' rebellion — its gold-crowned top floors a deliberate nod to the gold rush that built the city beneath it, and its red stripe near the summit said to represent the blood spilled at the stockade.
Melbourne beyond the webcams
Federation Square: the cultural precinct at the city's heart, home to galleries, cinemas and public events.
Melbourne Cricket Ground: the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere, host to cricket, Australian Rules football and Olympic history.
Royal Botanic Gardens: 38 hectares of themed gardens along the Yarra, a short walk from the CBD.
A treaty signed for the price of blankets and axes was voided within weeks, yet the city built on that disputed ground went on to briefly become the richest on Earth, host a nation's parliament, and regularly top the world's liveability rankings. Melbourne's founding paperwork never held up — its growth didn't need it to.
