Mostar — a bridge rebuilt to hold a city back together
Mostar takes its name from the "mostari," the bridge keepers who guarded the Ottoman crossing over the Neretva River during the city's founding centuries. That crossing, the Stari Most, was built between 1557 and 1566 by Mimar Hayruddin, an apprentice of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, and stood for over four centuries as one of the finest examples of Ottoman-era engineering in the Balkans — until it was destroyed by shelling on 9 November 1993, during the Bosnian War.
Reconstruction began in 2001 using original techniques and much of the recovered stone, and the bridge reopened in 2004, quickly becoming a symbol of reconciliation between the city's communities. UNESCO inscribed the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar as a World Heritage Site the following year, in 2005.

Since 1968, it has been organised as a formal competition — Mostar's 460th edition was held in July 2026 — sending divers 24 metres down into the river at speeds approaching 80 km/h, a plunge Red Bull's Cliff Diving World Series has staged here annually since 2016.
