Nairobi — a railway water stop that outgrew every plan for it

Nairobi exists because a survey team building the Uganda Railway needed somewhere reliable to store supplies. In 1899, British engineers established a depot roughly at Mile 327 of the line, chosen for its cool climate and dependable water — a site the local Maasai already called Enkare Nyirobi, "the place of cool waters," referring to the small river running through what was then open swampland. That name stuck long after the railway camp grew into a town, then a colonial capital in 1907, then, from 1963, the capital of an independent Kenya.

What no one planned for was how the city would grow around wildlife rather than displace it. Nairobi National Park, established in 1946 just a few kilometres from downtown, remains the only national park located within the boundaries of a capital city anywhere in the world — lions, giraffes and rhinos graze with the Nairobi skyline visible in the background. Wilson Airport, whose live camera feeds this page, tells a parallel story: founded alongside the Aero Club of East Africa in the late 1920s, it grew into one of the busiest general aviation airports on the continent, still serving as the launch point for countless safari flights into the Maasai Mara and beyond.

Wildlife wandered the runway before the airport did

In the early years of Nairobi's aerodrome, wild animals still roamed freely across the airstrip, a reminder of how recently the site had been open savanna. Nearly a century later, Nairobi National Park preserves that same coexistence deliberately just outside the city, letting wildlife and aviation share airspace within sight of each other.

Nairobi beyond the webcam

Nairobi National Park: the only national park inside a capital city worldwide, home to lions, giraffes and endangered black rhinos.

Wilson Airport: Kenya's principal general aviation hub, the gateway for safari flights into the Maasai Mara and beyond.

Nairobi River: the waterway that gave the city its name, still running through the capital today.

A colonial railway crew stopped here for water and cool air, never intending to build a city — yet the site's own name, borrowed from the people who knew it first, has outlasted the railway, the empire that built it, and every plan drawn up since. Nairobi's identity was decided before its first permanent building went up.

When to watch

Early morning: for the clearest skies and lightest air traffic at Wilson Airport before the day's safari flights depart.

Getting there: Wilson Airport sits about 6km south of Nairobi's city centre, near Nairobi National Park, Kenya.
