Not a scenic view — an air quality monitor

AQI.in runs a live camera for New Delhi, but unlike most webcams on this site, its purpose isn't tourism: it's paired with real-time readings for PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO₂, O₃ and SO₂, plus live weather, so viewers can watch the city's air quality change in real time.

New Delhi — a capital where the weather forecast doubles as a health warning

New Delhi has topped IQAir's ranking of the world's most polluted capital city on multiple occasions, and its winter smog crisis has become one of the most visible urban pollution stories anywhere on Earth. Between October and November each year, farmers across Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh burn roughly 23 million tonnes of leftover crop stubble to clear fields for winter sowing — a practice that remains illegal yet persistent, largely because farmers say promised financial incentives to stop rarely materialise. That smoke drifts straight into Delhi's air basin at exactly the moment weather turns against the city.

Geography does the rest of the damage. As monsoon rains taper off in October, wind speeds drop and the atmospheric boundary layer compresses, trapping pollutants near ground level; through December to February, cooler temperatures intensify temperature inversions, layering thick fog on top of the smoke to create the acrid haze residents describe simply as "the season." On its worst days, PM2.5 concentrations have measured more than fifteen times the World Health Organization's safe limit — a level researchers have compared to smoking multiple cigarettes a day just by breathing outside.

Artificial lungs, turned brown in ten days

To make Delhi's pollution crisis tangible, campaigners once installed a set of artificial lungs outdoors in the city, fitted with filters to simulate human breathing. Within ten days, the once-pale filters had turned a sickly dark brown — a visual demonstration of what the city's residents are estimated to inhale simply by stepping outside during smog season.

New Delhi beyond the air quality camera

Red Fort: the 17th-century Mughal fortress-palace at the heart of Old Delhi, its red sandstone walls often visible through the city's haze.

Qutub Minar: the tallest brick minaret in the world, construction begun around 1193, UNESCO-listed since 1993.

India Gate: the war memorial arch at the centre of New Delhi's ceremonial Lutyens-designed core.

Most cities put up a webcam to show off their skyline. New Delhi's live camera exists to show residents and the world something less flattering but arguably more useful: exactly how bad the air actually is, in real time, without spin.

When the air is worst

Post-Diwali, October-November: when firework smoke combines with peak stubble-burning season for the year's most severe smog spells.

About the source: New Delhi became India's capital in 1911 and was formally inaugurated in 1931, designed by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, India.
