Piran — a Venetian square built where fishing boats once moored
Piran packs a full medieval town onto a narrow finger of land jutting into the Adriatic, its streets so tightly wound that squeezed houses and covered alleys are as much a feature as any single monument. Tartini Square, the town's oval heart, was originally the inner harbour itself, filled in and paved only in 1894 — until then, boats moored where cafés now line the square, and a tram to nearby Portorož turned here right up until 1953.
The square takes its name from Giuseppe Tartini, the Baroque violinist and composer born in the house that still stands at its edge on 8 April 1692. His bronze statue, unveiled in 1896, faces the Church of St. George on the hill above, whose Venetian-style bell tower — modelled on St Mark's Campanile in Venice — offers panoramic views back across the terracotta rooftops toward the Adriatic and, on clear days, the distant Alps.

Tartini claimed he spent the rest of his life trying, and failing, to recapture what he'd heard in his sleep — a legend that still follows the square bearing his name.
