Rhodes — the island the Knights of St. John made their fortress
Rhodes, largest of Greece's Dodecanese islands, sits at the crossroads of the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean, a position that has drawn conquerors for millennia. The Knights Hospitaller arrived in 1309 and held the island for over two centuries, dividing their defence among seven national "tongues," each responsible for a stretch of the fortifications ringing the medieval city. Their walled Old Town, still home to more than 6,000 residents today, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, recognised for its influence on eastern Mediterranean fortress design and its layered Frankish and Ottoman architecture.
Centuries earlier, the same harbour that Rhodes Marina now overlooks was guarded by one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Colossus of Rhodes, a 33-metre bronze statue of the sun god Helios, raised around 280 BC to celebrate the city's successful defence against a year-long siege. It stood for only 54 years before an earthquake toppled it in 226 BC, and its remains lay on the ground for eight centuries before being sold as scrap.

Today, two bronze statues of a stag and a doe stand at the harbour mouth instead, a modern nod to the legend rather than a marker of the statue's true, still-debated location.
