Rovaniemi — a city Alvar Aalto rebuilt in the shape of a reindeer
Rovaniemi's modern layout exists because of a catastrophe. As German forces retreated through Lapland in 1944, they burned roughly 90 percent of the town's buildings to the ground, leaving little standing but chimney stacks. In January 1945, the Finnish Association of Architects commissioned Alvar Aalto to design the reconstruction, and his approved 1946 plan — the Poronsarvikaava, or "Reindeer Antler Plan" — laid five arterial roads out in the shape of a reindeer's head and antlers, with the town's sports stadium standing in as the animal's eye. Aalto went on to design the City Hall, main library and Lappia Hall, the last building he saw completed before his death.
Rovaniemi's other defining feature sits eight kilometres north of the city centre: the Arctic Circle line itself, which cuts directly through Santa Claus Village. Finnish tourism officials formally declared Lapland "Santa Claus Land" in 1984 and opened the village in 1985, giving Rovaniemi its now-official status as Santa's hometown — a title that draws visitors from around the world to stand with one foot in the Arctic and one in the temperate zone.

Rovaniemi remains one of the only cities in the world whose street layout was deliberately designed to trace an animal's silhouette.
