Östersund, capital of Jämtland County in central Sweden, sits on the eastern shore of Lake Storsjön — Sweden's fifth-largest lake and home to the legendary Storsjöodjuret, the Swedish cousin of the Loch Ness Monster. With around 65,000 inhabitants, Östersund is the only large city in Sweden's mountainous interior, connecting the Swedish coast to the Norwegian border at Åre and Trondheim. The city is internationally famous as the home of the Östersund Biathlon Stadium, which has hosted the IBU Biathlon World Championships (2008, 2019) and the Biathlon World Cup opening every December since 1986 — making it the most iconic biathlon venue on earth. In winter, the city transforms under thick snow and sub-zero temperatures into a quintessential Nordic winter scene: frozen lake, birch forests white with frost, ski trails threading through the woods.
The Östersund Biathlon Stadium (Östersunds Skidstadion) on the Oviksfjällen plateau above the city is a world-class venue with a 250-metre shooting range, 7.5 km of competition loops, and grandstands for up to 20,000 spectators. Frösön, the island in Lake Storsjön connected to the city by bridge, features the historic Frösö Zoo, the medieval Frösö Church (one of Sweden's oldest) and panoramic views over the frozen lake and surrounding mountains. Åre, Sweden's premier ski resort, is just 90 km to the west — making Östersund the natural gateway to Swedish alpine skiing. The city sits at latitude 63°N, giving spectacular Northern Lights displays from September to March and the midnight sun phenomenon in summer.
"Östersund is where biathlon lives: the World Cup has opened here every December since 1986, the World Championships have been staged twice, and the Swedish national team trains on home snow. Surround it with a frozen Nordic lake, endless birch forests and Northern Lights, and you have one of Scandinavia's most compelling winter destinations."
Winter sports, Jämtland and the Scandinavian Mountains
Beyond biathlon, Östersund is surrounded by some of Sweden's finest winter sports terrain. The Jämtland mountains (Jämtlandsfjällen) stretch west towards the Norwegian border with some of Scandinavia's highest peaks. Åre (90 km west, Scandinavia's top alpine resort, host of the Alpine Ski World Championships 2019) is the crown jewel. Vemdalen (80 km south) and Funäsdalen (115 km southwest) offer further skiing. The Jämtland Triangle — a legendary cross-country ski route through the mountains linking three staffed mountain lodges — is one of Scandinavia's most celebrated multi-day ski tours. The Storsjöcykeln cycling route circles Lake Storsjön in summer; in winter, parts of the lake freeze solid enough for ice fishing, skating and even driving. Moose safaris in the surrounding boreal forests are popular year-round.

📷 View live webcam →The Östersund webcam captures the city's most distinctive features in real time: the vast expanse of Lake Storsjön frozen and white in winter, the low Nordic light slanting across the snow-covered rooftops, the forested hills of Frösön island across the water, and the dramatic Scandinavian sky — cloudless and electric blue on cold clear days, or churning with the grey-white clouds that bring the next snowfall. On the clearest nights from late autumn to early spring, the camera may catch a faint green glow on the horizon: the Northern Lights at latitude 63°N.
