Whistler — a ski hill built for an Olympic bid it lost, then won decades later
Whistler Mountain opened in 1966, built by a group of investors chasing a Winter Olympics bid that had just failed — they went ahead with the resort anyway. It took nearly four decades, but the dream came true on 2 July 2003, when the IOC awarded the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to Vancouver-Whistler, with alpine skiing staged at Whistler Creekside and Nordic and biathlon events built from scratch at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley. Whistler and neighbouring Blackcomb Mountain had already merged operations in 1997, creating what remains the largest ski resort in North America: over 8,100 acres of terrain, more than 200 marked runs, and three glaciers across two side-by-side peaks.
The two mountains stayed physically separate until 2008, when the Peak 2 Peak Gondola opened between the Roundhouse and Rendezvous Lodges, cutting what had been a full descent-and-reascent between summits down to an 11-minute ride. At launch it held three Guinness World Records simultaneously: the highest cable car above ground at 436 metres, the longest free span between towers, and the longest unsupported span at 3.024 kilometres — a record it held until 2017. The resort's own name, meanwhile, has nothing to do with skiing at all: it comes from the hoary marmot, a mountain rodent whose alarm call is a sharp, piercing whistle.
