Wrocław — a city rebuilt after nearly vanishing entirely
Founded more than a thousand years ago and long known by its German name, Breslau, Wrocław was declared a Nazi "fortress city" in the final months of the Second World War. The 82-day siege that followed, ending only on 6 May 1945, left roughly three-quarters of the city's buildings in ruins — one of the last German cities to fall, holding out even longer than Berlin. After the war, Wrocław became Polish territory under the Potsdam Conference, and its German population was replaced almost entirely by Polish settlers, many displaced from Lwów, now Lviv in Ukraine.
What survived and was rebuilt earned Wrocław the nickname "Venice of the North": the city sits across a dozen islands on the Oder river, connected by more than 120 bridges — a number surpassed in Europe only by Venice and Amsterdam. At its centre, the Rynek, one of Europe's largest medieval market squares, is anchored by the Old Town Hall, a Gothic masterpiece built over roughly 250 years between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Watch live →In the 1980s, the Orange Alternative movement painted cartoon dwarves over communist authorities' whitewashed anti-graffiti patches, turning protest into absurdist theatre — one activist recalled the government struggling to explain arresting people for "an illegal meeting of dwarfs." A monument dwarf appeared in 2001 to commemorate the movement, and the bronze figures have multiplied ever since, each with its own name and personality, now numbering well over a thousand across the city.
