Zakynthos — an island the sea turtles chose to call home
Zakynthos, known to sailors for centuries by its Venetian name Zante, owes much of its modern identity to a creature that has been nesting on its southern shores far longer than any human settlement: the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta. Laganas Bay and the surrounding beaches of Gerakas, Dafni and Kalamaki form one of the most important nesting grounds for the species anywhere in the Mediterranean, protected since December 1999 by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, a 135-square-kilometre reserve encompassing the bay and the islets of Marathonisi, Pelouzo and the Strofades.
Marathonisi itself, visible from the webcam, is nicknamed Turtle Island for its shape as much as for the creatures that nest along its shores each summer between June and August. Elsewhere on the island, Zakynthos Town was rebuilt in neoclassical style after a devastating 1953 earthquake flattened most of its Venetian-era buildings, while the island's most photographed spot, Navagio Beach, sits on the opposite, northwestern coast — a rusting shipwreck on white sand between towering limestone cliffs.
