The race is rooted in Charlotte from every angle, drawing roughly 6,000 runners each year for what many participants describe as a bucket-list experience and one of the coolest courses in the country.
The course was reworked for 2026 to set the race up for continued growth. It starts in the heart of Uptown amid landmark museums — the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture — before a downhill first mile carries runners toward South End. Just before mile 2, at the first water stop, the route crosses onto Charlotte's inner beltway, I-277, taking up all inner lanes for roughly three miles as it wraps around center city — the only day each year this highway closes to traffic for a footrace. Exiting the highway with one mile to go, runners pass the Truist Cheer Station and finish through tree-lined streets.
The finish festival turns the Queen City's most scenic race into a city-wide celebration, with refreshments and activities for all ages.
