Lucerne — the city between the Reuss, the lake and the mountains

Lucerne lies at the northwestern end of Lake Lucerne, where the Reuss river flows out of the lake and splits the city into Old Town and New Town. The city's landmark is the Chapel Bridge, built in 1333 as part of the town fortifications and, at over 200 metres long, the oldest surviving covered wooden bridge in Europe. It originally featured 111 triangular painted panels beneath its roof depicting scenes from Swiss history. The adjoining Water Tower, built between 1290 and 1300, is even older than the bridge itself and has served over the centuries as a watchtower, archive, treasury and even a prison with a torture chamber. On 18 August 1993, a devastating fire destroyed much of the Chapel Bridge; only the two bridgeheads and the Water Tower survived before the bridge was faithfully rebuilt. Not far away, the world-famous Lion Monument, the "Dying Lion of Lucerne," commemorates the Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution. Surrounded by the local mountains Pilatus and Rigi, Lucerne became an early tourism hotspot as far back as 1840.

Alpine swifts have nested in the Water Tower for decades

A colony of alpine swifts has nested in the roof space of the Water Tower for many decades. When the birds return from their winter quarters in equatorial Africa each April, locals in Lucerne regard them as reliable harbingers of spring — a quiet counterpart to the tourist bustle around the famous bridge.

Lucerne beyond the webcam

Pilatus: Reachable via the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, Lucerne's local mountain rises to 2132m and offers a panorama over all of Central Switzerland.

Rigi: The "Queen of the Mountains" at 1797m is reachable by Europe's oldest mountain railway and offers one of the finest views in the region.

Musegg Wall: This section of Lucerne's town fortifications, with its distinctive towers, offers a free panoramic view over the city, the lake and the mountains.

A bridge that was almost entirely lost to flames in 1993 and yet still stands today as the city's landmark: the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne shows how a rebuilt structure need not lose its symbolic power, as long as the memory of the original stays alive.

When it's worth a look

The Chapel Bridge, at sunset: for the bridge's characteristic reflection in the waters of the Reuss, as the golden light warms the façades of the Old Town.
