Milan — a cathedral six centuries in the making, a stadium built in thirteen months

Milan, capital of Lombardy, built its identity on two very different monuments centuries apart. Construction of the Duomo di Milano began in 1386 and continued, with long interruptions, for over 600 years — making it one of the largest and slowest cathedrals ever completed, its marble spires and thousands of statues now the city's defining silhouette above Piazza del Duomo.

Just as central to Milan's identity, though far younger, is San Siro. Built in an astonishing 13 months between 1925 and 1926 at the initiative of AC Milan president Piero Pirelli, the stadium was designed English-style, with no athletics track, purely for football. It has hosted both AC Milan and Inter since 1947, earning its nickname "La Scala del calcio" — football's answer to Milan's famed opera house.

A cathedral's blueprint borrowed for a new stadium

When architects unveiled plans for a future stadium to replace San Siro, they drew direct inspiration from the Duomo di Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, wrapping the design in a sunlit glass galleria in homage to the cathedral that took six centuries to complete. In 2023, San Siro itself escaped demolition after years of debate, its historic towers and spiral ramps preserved.

Milan beyond the webcam

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: opened in 1877, this glass-roofed arcade beside the Duomo remains one of the world's oldest and grandest shopping galleries.

Teatro alla Scala: Milan's world-famous opera house, a short walk from the Duomo, continues to host some of the greatest performances in classical music.

Quadrilatero d'Oro: Milan's "golden rectangle" fashion district gathers flagship stores from the world's leading designers, cementing the city's status as a global fashion capital.

A cathedral that took over six centuries to finish, and a football stadium built in barely thirteen months just a few kilometers away: Milan holds both extremes of construction time within the same city, each one just as central to its identity as the other.

When to watch

The Duomo, at golden hour: for the warm light on its white marble facade and spires, especially striking as the Piazza del Duomo below fills with evening crowds.

Getting there: Milan is served by three airports and Italy's busiest rail hub, connecting the city to destinations across Europe, Lombardy, Italy.
