The Global Ski Marathon Calendar is reality

“The first calendar uniting ALL marathon races around the world. Doesn’t matter if Worldloppet, Euroloppet, Russialoppet, American Ski Marathon Series, Visma Ski Classics…

Every marathon race should be considered and be visible in one place: The Global Ski Marathon Calendar”. explique Epp Paal, le CEO de Worldloppet.

This is what Worldloppet aimed at creating for the coming season, a tool that should be used together with the Global Ranking and serve race organizers establishing the level of participants but – above all - help popular cross-country skiers.

The Global Ski Calendar & Ranking should, in fact, not only be useful finding the suitable starting wave for skiers who has not taken part to any other Worldloppet races,

but also motivate skiers getting involved into the world of Cross Country Ski Marathons, seeing their efforts recognized, besides having a broader overview on the ski marathons worldwide.

In the past months, both tools have taken shape and are ready to support skiers around the world starting from the coming season 2019/2020.

The launch of the Global Ranking has already taken place with the Worldloppet Summer events in the Southern Hemisphere, where Ushuaia Loppet, Kangaroo Hoppet and Merino Muster opened the path to this new system.

More than 120 races in the Global Ski Marathon Calendar

Great success for the launch of this brand new Worldloppet project:

“As for today we have 20 new race organizations that joined this new project of the Global Calendar & Ranking with their races and some more are willing to join.

We are satisfied with this result and about the interest shown by all of these races and are very positive that this number will increase further in the next years” poursuit Epp Paal.

Besides the 20 Worldloppet races (that include even more races counting all the different distances), races from several countries joined the Global Calendar, such as Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Austria, and Germany.

“I am happy because even with the 20 races that joined the calendar I could widen my knowledge about Ski Marathons and I am willing to try some of them.

This is something we wish to happen to more skiers so that they can get inspired and get to know new races, keeping on skiing around the world!

Smaller local races are good opportunity for freshmen in marathon skiing to earn starting position to some classical Worldloppet challenge”

The Idea and Goals behind the Global Ski Marathon Calendar in detail

Over the past 41 years, Worldloppet has united the best ski marathons of the world. Today it counts member races in 20 countries with over 100 000 participations per year.

Almost 7000 of the Worldloppet skiers participate at last in 2 races per year, while 1000 take part in 3 races. Worldloppet has 20 000 passport holders and over 5000 Worldloppet masters, people who have skied at least 10 ski marathons in different countries.

There are still a lot (ca 200 races over 30 km) of destinations to discover in the world and this project should make it easier for skiers finding them.

Many skiers lack motivation in participating in their home races as they don’t give any advantage in start positions in Worldloppet races and this is also something that should change with this new tool.

This united worldwide long-distance xc-ski calendar will contain results database and update the participants’ ranking.

The new ranking system is not meant as a competition series, but in first place as a ranking system showing the participant’s level to help skiers getting deserved start positions at races where they do not have a racer history.

This project should also provide something special for participants whose top racing days are over, but result in their age group still matters.

All in all, as it was already stated when announcing the end of the FIS Worldloppet Cup, Worldloppet will raise the awareness and popularity of marathon skiing “around the world”.
