Turin — the city where Italy's crown briefly rested
Turin sits in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, where the Po river meets the Sangone, Dora Riparia and Stura di Lanzo. From 1861 to 1865, it served as the first capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy, a role it held only briefly before the capital moved on to Florence and eventually Rome. The city's most recognizable landmark, the Mole Antonelliana, rises 167.5 meters above the rooftops — originally commissioned in 1863 as a synagogue before spiraling costs led the Jewish community to sell the unfinished project to the city in 1878.
Completed in 1889 after architect Alessandro Antonelli's death, the tower now houses the National Museum of Cinema and appears on the Italian 2-cent euro coin. Its silhouette became the emblem of the 2006 Winter Olympics, hosted in a city long defined by heavy industry — Fiat has called Turin home since 1899 — and by the Shroud of Turin, housed in the city's Renaissance-style cathedral.

Watch live →Alessandro Antonelli was originally hired to design a synagogue for Turin's Jewish community in 1863. As costs spiraled far beyond the original budget, the community sold the unfinished tower to the city in 1878, and Antonelli pressed on with an ever more ambitious design, dying before its completion in 1889. Today it houses the world's tallest museum building, dedicated entirely to cinema.
