Verona — a Roman arena that never stopped performing
Verona sits on the Adige river in Italy's Veneto region, its historic center built around an amphitheater constructed in the 1st century AD, between the reigns of Augustus and Claudius. The third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy after the Colosseum and the Capua amphitheater, the Arena was built outside the original city walls before Emperor Gallienus extended the walls to enclose it in the 3rd century. For nearly 400 years it hosted gladiator games until Emperor Honorius banned them in 404 AD.
The Arena's pink marble stands remarkably well preserved despite 12th-century earthquakes that toppled its outer ring, leaving only four arches of the original facade standing. Since the early 20th century it has become one of the world's premier open-air opera venues, its acoustics drawing legendary performers from Maria Callas to Luciano Pavarotti each summer. A short walk away, Juliet's House gives the city its second identity, as the setting Shakespeare chose for Romeo and Juliet — a play he likely wrote without ever visiting Verona himself.
