Bologna — the city under 62 kilometres of arcades
Bologna, capital of Emilia-Romagna, carries three nicknames earned over centuries: La Rossa for its terracotta rooftops and brick porticoes, La Dotta for the University of Bologna, founded in 1088 and recognised as the oldest university in the Western world, and La Grassa for a cuisine that gave the world tortellini, tagliatelle al ragù and mortadella. Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, at the heart of the historic centre, is where the city's medieval skyline still stands watch over daily life.
Two leaning towers dominate that square: the Torre degli Asinelli, built between 1109 and 1119, rises 97.2 metres and remains the tallest medieval tower still standing in Italy. Beside it, the shorter Torre Garisenda, roughly 48 metres tall, leans visibly due to structural subsidence that set in centuries ago — its interior has long been closed to visitors, but the tilt is unmistakable from the square below. Together, the Due Torri are Bologna's most recognisable landmark, alongside the porticoes that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.

Watch live →Sasso Marconi was renamed in 1938 in honour of Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of radio, who grew up nearby at Villa Griffone — the family estate where he ran his earliest wireless transmission experiments. The villa now houses a museum dedicated to his work, a short drive from the square the webcam looks out on.
