Pisa — a bell tower that has leaned for 800 years
Pisa built its wealth as a medieval maritime republic, its fleets trading and warring across the Mediterranean alongside Genoa and Venice. That wealth paid for the Piazza dei Miracoli, raised just outside the old city walls from the 11th century onward: the Cathedral, begun in 1064, the circular Baptistery, started in 1152, and the Leaning Tower, the complex's freestanding bell tower, begun in 1173. All four monuments — the fourth being the Camposanto Monumentale cemetery — were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1987.
The tower's tilt appeared almost immediately: by the time builders reached the third of its planned eight storeys in 1178, the soft, unstable subsoil beneath its shallow foundation had already begun to give way. Construction dragged on in fits and starts for nearly two centuries, finally finishing in 1372. By 1990 the lean had reached 5.5 degrees, prompting a major stabilisation project that removed soil from beneath the north side; the tower reopened in 2001 at a safer, still-photogenic 3.97 degrees, where it stands today.

Watch live →In 1934, Benito Mussolini ordered 200 tonnes of concrete pumped into the tower's foundation to correct its tilt. The intervention backfired, increasing the lean rather than reducing it — a lesson later engineers took seriously when the real stabilisation project finally began in 1990.
